Safe Glass VSG, VSG/ESG, and ESG – What Are the Differences?

Safety glass comes in several forms, the most popular being laminated glass (safety, bonded) VSG, heat-strengthened laminated glass (safety, bonded - heat-strengthened) VSG/ESG, and regular tempered glass.

Each of these types of glass has unique properties that make it suitable for various applications, from construction and industry to automotive and interior design. Here are the main differences between them:

  • VSG laminated glass (safety, bonded)– consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with a special film (most commonly polyvinyl butyral, PVB). Thanks to the film, in the event of breakage, the glass remains in place, preventing sharp shards from scattering. This makes laminated glass particularly safe, making it an ideal choice where user protection is a priority – for example, in car windows. An additional advantage is protection against UV radiation and improved acoustic insulation, which makes laminated glass a frequent choice in modern office buildings. However, safety glass is not resistant to compression and impacts, which significantly limits its applications.

  • VSG/ESG heat-strengthened laminated glass (safety heat-strengthened, bonded)– is glass that has undergone thermal treatment, giving it strength greater than that of traditional glass. The tempering process involves heating the glass to a very high temperature and then rapidly cooling it, which introduces stresses into the glass. As a result, safety tempered glass has increased resistance to impacts, weather conditions, and compression, and in the event of breakage, it shatters into small, blunt-ended pieces, minimizing the risk of cuts. It is a popular choice for applications such as shower enclosures, glass doors, furniture, balcony glazing, glass canopies, and railings.

  • ESG tempered glass– undergoes the same tempering process as safety tempered glass, but due to the lack of additional safeguards, it can be riskier in the event of breakage. The glass fragments are blunt-ended, but the absence of bonding or film means they can scatter. Therefore, this type of glass is mainly used where there is no intense contact with users, such as in certain types of building facades or in interior design.

In summary, laminated glass best protects against shards and provides additional UV and acoustic protection, safety tempered glass is characterized by increased impact resistance and safe breakage, while tempered glass is harder than traditional glass but does not guarantee complete safety in case of breakage.
